Bonnie Acker
Burlington, Vermont
“I’m a lifelong artist and so grateful for being able to do what I love. I’m continually evolving, creating new images, and finding hope for this precious planet.”
Bonnie’s been a landscape painter for over forty years, showing the beauty and resilience of nature, while calling attention to the care that is needed to protect our natural world. “For all places on earth, from wild and breathtaking mountains to sustainably tended farmland, great care and forethought is essential for keeping those areas intact. We need to embrace the protections that are needed, now more than ever before.”
Bonnie’s also been an illustrator for nonprofit organizations for more than fifty years, creating logos, posters, and scenes of community-building and resilience. “For creative causes furthering justice and well-being through affordable housing, organic farming, innovative education and many other strategies, my colorful art has reflected and celebrated the courage of optimists working for change.”
Bonnie has been publicly recognized for her art and many community contributions. Amongst numerous highlights, she was included in the book Legendary Locals of Burlington. She was interviewed in the video “Co-op Gardening with Bonnie,” an episode of Stuck in Vermont. She was featured in an exhibit at the Shelburne Museum entitled “Eyes On The Land: Artists Explore Farms and Forests Conserved by the Vermont Land Trust.” She was honored by the City of Burlington in a proclamation creating “Bonnie Acker Day.”
“When I hear that someone is deriving strength from one of my paintings or a grassroots organization is seeing its good work furthered by one of my images, then I know that my art is meaningful. My life is continuing to be connected to individuals and to organizations, in equal and meaningful measure.”
Bonnie is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and has lived and worked in Burlington, Vermont, since 1986. Besides her time working as an artist, she has been helping for years at the Intervale Community Farm (a large community-supported-agriculture cooperative in Burlington), the Green Mountain Technology & Career Center Farm (a destination for high school students in Jeffersonville), and the Greater Burlington YMCA (where her flower gardens greet everyone walking by).
“Many, many thanks to everyone coming into the Woodstock Gallery to discover new views of life. We are all so fortunate to be here in this very special place called Vermont!”
